Browsing through some Polish blogs I recently spotted a few photos from "The House Fight", a tv programme on interior design (that I am happy not to have watched). In each season there are a few families designing their own apartments, the best aparatment's design is to win.
The photos surprised me a lot. I wasn't expecting such an amount of ugliness and tastelessness from a programme about designing interiors! Yes, tastelessness. The people participating mostly have no taste, good or even bad, because, as Arnold Bennet once said "Good taste is better than bad taste, but bad taste is better than no taste."
I am an idealist. I think the tv should educate and show good patterns. It doesn't have to display the high-end design, a decent level would be enough.
I dream about interiors without wood-like furniture (white IKEA mdf furniture would be better and not "pretending" anything), without beige leather sofas (or, even worse, made of "eco-leather") that do not match every interior unlike many people think, with a color palette different than beige+beige+grey+brown+beige. Without polyester and other articifial textiles. Without plastic gold. Without treating a tv set like a piece of art (or maybe a god?) hanging exposed in the center of the room.
Not event to talk about an overall composition, proportional good quality furniture, harmony of textures and colors...Color combinations are very important for the final effect (I already wrote about color palettes) but people tend to forget this fact. Funny is that generally people in the House Fight don't ever design bookshelves. Is it because they read e-books?
The participants obviously dont't have to know how design theirs apartments properly, and that is exactly why the experts should help them to achieve the best final effect possible. And here, the best effect achieved is mediocrity.
Wouldn't it be gorgeous to show us how we can arrange our appartments better, instead of showing how terribly we are doing it now? I still haven't seen the programme and I never will. The photos say everything.
Somebody thought that these stickers make the room look better. They don't. The combination of pretending-to-be-luxurious fluffy cushions and mdf bed looks superpretentious. The curtains are from a very artificial textile and you can tell it.
I might be prejudiced against these colors but I saw an identical combination in a hospital. The paws on the wall do not add any value to the room.
The sink cabinet is unproportional and of bad quality. The shells around the mirror are the pure kitsch. "Gold" buckets next to the sink are supposed to look "rich", it's a very bad idea though.
The tv set is overexposed, and it's not anything beautiful, is it? The wall and the beige chairs are - unfortunately - ugly.
Is it possible for two pieces of furniture to match each other less than the couch and the table here? It's hard to imagine. Although now I think about it - the team couch versus the cushions may be strong opponent in this competition.
This interior is so ugly it made me laugh. The sink looks like a mega-sausage. Stones are ugly too, colors boring. The curtains - disastrous. The overall is just hideous.
Everything is wood-like, why? And these hands? It was supposed to be interesting but is, in fact, pointless.
Every of these elements is o.k. but where the context? How does it fit to white plastic windows, big beige tiles and all the building? The shelf on the windows is a bad solution.
Polyester is shouting out load from the cushion, cotton or wool textile would look much better. The flowerpots are placed randomly, where's the composition?
How is it, the "before" picture is so much better than the "after". The grained wooden furniture were really ok!
It's an estetic caushemar, everything is random, color combination is horrid.
The "painting" on wall is one of the ugliest things I've ever seen. It is NOT art.
Bathroom, water-closet, water- fish...aaaah, I get it!
Hey, the ugliest lamp ever is also here :-) Plastic windows are also bad, but unfortunately this is a sad standard in new blocks of flats. You can also see the "fabulous" architecture - tiny windows close to each other.
For the record, there were some interiors that were digestible. Not on a very high level, just decent.
White, safe, nice interior (except from the "table"). Not pretending to be more than it is. And the pots on the wall are great.
If it hadn't been for the eco-leather chairs it would be ok.
...here I like everything. I like the way tv set is hidden on the wooden wall. I like the couch. The lamps should be bigger or in a bigger amount of 6-8 but it's not a big deal.
