mood board interior ideas
 What is a mood board?

Mood board is a type of collage that is showing colors, textures, style of the elements used and the overall design of a project, in essence it's a compilation of inspirational elements. Mood boards can be composed of almost anything - texture samples, quotes, landscape photos, furniture photos, sketches, everything that comes to our mind when thinking of the atmosphere of the project and that will let us start our work. Bold or dusty colors? Plastic, or wood? Soft, hard, dark, light?

What is a mood board used for?

Mood boards help a lot in developing the project, they are a medium often used by architects, interior designers, website designers, corporate identity projects, clothes collections, gardens. Although sometimes they need to be explained to a client, mood boards let avoiding drastic changes later in a project - the preliminary project can be presented with a relatively small amount of work done and the key assumptions can be set between client and designer.

Of course you can create a mood board for yourself too- to have a clear image of your idea when shopping for your apartment, or to easily explain to your architect what you mean.

How to create a mood board?

Words can be very helpful when starting a project, you can place them on your board too. Here are some examples of word sets that help to define interior's character:

* glossy, dark, hard, edgy, aggressive, plastic
* bright, pastel, soft, elegant, delicate, white
* contrasted, rough, eclectic, wooden, natural - these are for my mood board below (the first one)
You can really see these interiors when reading the word sets, can't you?
When the main guidelines are set with the words we can develop our idea. We can add furniture, paintings, color palettes, inspirational photos. The collage can be created on paper, from actual textures and photos cut out from magazines as well as on a computer. On a computer you only need Paint, Windows' free program, there are also some online tools like Olioboard or Sampleboard that already have some furniture in their database.

Mood board examples

The first two moodboard below are mine. The living room in my apartment could look like either one of these! Especially with this beautiful dog :-) The rest are examples I found on Pinterest, some are digital, some done on paper. So, now you know how to start designing a room?
