Great architecture of The Museum of History of Polish Jews in Warsaw | IN MY LENS

The new Museum of History of Polish Jews in Warsaw, designed by finnish architects with an unbelievable name Arkkitehtitoimisto Lahdelma & Mahlamäki Oymieści, is set in Warsaw. It's built on the site of the former Jewish ghetto, opposite the Monument to the Warsaw Ghetto Heroes. The building looks quite modest from the outside, while from the inside it is "broken" by a giant curvy passage, letting the light in. I couldn't wait to see it and finally, last time I was in Warsaw, I did.

In contrast to many existing Jewish museums the museum in Warsaw was supposed to be - and is - a museum of life, culture and Jewish-Polish heritage, not a museum of Holocaust. That's why, though the passage in the building is a strong accent, it is not supposed to be dramatic. The curvy shapes, sandy concrete cladding and the light that softly penetrates the building makes it interior optimistic and fresh.

It is a good piece of architecture, without unnecessary elements and - what I value the most - perfectly harmonizing with the city. It respects the scale of the surroundings (look at the pictures above: the building is of the same height as the others visible in the background, and  of similar width as  their frontages). It doesn't take the city's space but rather recreates it. It has improved the quality of the green square it is set on and it stressed the importance of the Monument to the Warsaw Ghetto Heroes.

"Beauty and the trees are the most important. And the main idea : the passage as a fissure, like a canyon , like a separation of the Red Sea " - says Rainer Mahlamäki, the architect of the Museum.
