Gold and shiny American interiors of the seventies in American Hustle | MOVIE SET DESIGN

American Hustle

In this easy-going crime movie with Manhattan in the background we see interiors that we wouldn't normally associate with New York of the seveties. The interiors shown are not dirty with a lot of cigarette smoke but elegant and shiny.

The actors playing in the movie are excellent - Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and absolutely amazing Jennifer Lawrence are hard to be outshined but the set design itself is almost as good. The interiors are full of bold colors and metallic materials, diversified textures and intruiging with their forms furniture. Our, Polish, seventies looked completely, I really mean completely differently but when it comes to design it was much more interesting period in United States called "the decade that taste forgot".

The most interesting space in the movie is Rosalyn Rosenfeld's (Jennifer Lawrence) apartment. Extravagant interiors reflect her character. Rosalyn is a beautiful woman, full of temper. She enjoys playing with interior design, as her apartment shows, maybe too much. This interior is not an example of good taste but is a feast for the eyes - - just like the woman herself. The walls are covered with metallic wallpapers, floors with carpets. There are lots of geometric shapes and sharp forms inspired with brutalist architecture. The art director Judy Becker was searching for inspirations in interior design magazines of the 1976–78. Paul Evans's design and his brutalist furniture had influence for the set decor.
Judy Becker wanted to avoid classic colors of the seventies - mustard yellow and greens - and used bluses and clean yellows instead. What is important for the set design as a whole are the materials - bronze, travertine, chrome, that are repeatedly used in different sets. There is also the same color palette used in whole the movie, as we see when comparing apartments of the two main female  characters. The other woman's, Sydney's (Amy Adams) Upper East Side apartment is modern, trendy and tasteful. With this features it is opposed to Rosalyn's apartment. What both apartments have in common is color palette.

Every interior in this movie can be an amazing inspiration for an apartment styling. It is not easy to find (at least in Europe) furniture and decorations in this style so it looks like it's not in trends now but it should be!
